The pop-up Library of Things will exist in the Dublin Food Co-op in Newmarket Square for the month of October as part of National Reuse Month, an initiative of the Regional Authorities to promote reuse with a nationwide series of events. The idea was formed when a group of people from a variety of initiatives including VOICE Ireland, Community Reuse Network, WeShare, FixJam, SHARECITY, and the Food Co-op came together to brainstorm and plan Reuse Month events in the Food Co-op.
A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption, and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.
The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free, however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item.
As this first initiative is going to be a pop-up we will primarily be dependent on donations and loans from businesses and individuals to stock the library. We are hoping to source items which were identified in our online survey as the most desired, including sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment.
The library is open during these times for the month of October:
If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the Library of Things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or check out our profile page. We will also need volunteers to man the library over the month. If you would like to volunteer for even a few hours at the Library of Things please fill in this form.
The Library of Things is an initiative already happening in many towns and cities around the world. We would like to bring the idea to Dublin in the hope of it encouraging other community groups to set one up in their towns across Ireland. A lot of enthusiasm has been expressed for a permanent Library of Things in Dublin and beyond, and we hope that this will act as a test run, to work out some of the kinks and increase awareness and interest in the project.
In addition to the Library of Things there will be many other events happening in the Dublin Food Co-op and other venues, including a FixJam where skilled fixers will help you repair items, a food rescue meal event, a clothes swap and upcycling workshop, and a community fridge (dates to be confirmed on some events).
